Americans are More Divided on Politics than Race

Sixty-six percent (66%) of voters rate relations between Republicans and Democrats as poor. That is double the 30% who say race relations in America are poor.

Just 48% of Republicans and 52% of Democrats said that they’d prefer to live in a neighborhood with neighbors from both parties. Thirty-seven percent (37%) of Republicans said they’d rather live in a neighborhood with mostly Republicans, and 33% of Democrats said they’d rather live in a neighborhood with mostly Democrats.

By way of comparison, large majorities of white voters (69%), black voters (79%), and voters of another race (71%) would prefer to live in a neighborhood where there was a mix of people of different races.

Finally, as bad as things are today, just 42% say relations between Republicans and Democrats are likely to get better over the next 20 years. Sixty-nine percent (69%) expect race relations to get better over that time frame.
