Voters Don’t Think Illegal Immigrants Voting Should Hold up a Budget Agreement

Despite overwhelming support for requiring proof of citizenship to vote (86%), there is little support for holding up a budget agreement over the issue. A Napolitan News Service Survey of 1,000 registered voters found that 48% would rather avoid a government shutdown than force one in order to ensure new laws requiring proof of citizenship. This survey was conducted August 21-22, 2024.

A majority of voters believe that a large number of illegal immigrants will be allowed to vote this year, but this issue isn’t more important to voters than keeping the government running. Congress should listen to the people and pass legislation to protect voting rights in a way that doesn’t disrupt the budget agreement.

This Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on August 21-22, 2024. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc.
