The GOP Victory Unpacked

Election Day turned out to be a good one for Republicans as Donald Trump won the presidency and the GOP won control of the U.S. Senate. This year’s election marks the tenth consecutive time that no candidate received more than 53% of the vote. This has been the longest stretch of close elections in American history.

Trump may have won the popular vote nationwide, but it will take another couple of weeks before we know for sure. Votes from Democratic leaning states on the west coast remain to be counted.

Overall, the election unfolded largely as pollsters and analysts expected. There were no surprise outside of the swing states and the swing states were generally close.

Pre-election polling found that 42% believe that it’s unlikely progressives will accept Trump as the legitimate winner.
