26% Say Best Way to Reduce School Shootings is Armed Security Guards, 23% Say Background Checks

To help prevent school shootings, 26% say placing armed security guards at public schools is the most effective approach while 23% believe requiring background checks for all gun purchases would be most effective.

When asked how many students have died in school shootings this year, the average response was 620. In reality, there have been 24 deaths from school shooting in 2024. The tragic loss of any life, especially an innocent child’s, is tragic and devastating. As the nation searches for solutions, it is clear that a better understanding of the underlying realities is required.

Data released earlier show that voters dramatically overstate the share of gun deaths that result from mass shootings. That misunderstanding has convinced many that they or a family member is likely to die from a random shooting.

This Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on September 16, 2024. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
