61% Say It’s More Important to Secure The Border Than Solve the Root Cause of Immigration

Immigration was a hot topic during Tuesday’s presidential debate and continues to be an important issue in this election season. Sixty-one percent (61%) of voters say it is more important to secure the border, and 33% say is it more important address the root causes of immigration in other countries.

A Napolitan News Service Survey of 1,000 registered voters conducted just before the presidential debate found that 36% of voters approve of how Harris has handled the situation at the border while 53% disapprove. Those numbers are better than how voters viewed Biden’s handling of the border (28% approve/63% disapprove in January 2024).

Voters make a clear distinction between legal and illegal immigration. Pre-debate, voters believed illegal immigration would likely increase under Harris and decrease under Trump. We will soon release post-debate numbers on the same questions.

This Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on September 9-10, 2024, BEFORE the presidential debate. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc.
